We’ve all heard it before; don’t fix what’s not broken. But what happens when your skin care products aren’t working for you anymore? What happens when that beloved moisturizer that you’ve been using for the last however many years, just isn’t living up to your standards? Your skin changes, and that means sometimes your skin care products need to change too.
It can be difficult starting from scratch again. Trust me, I just went through this after having my daughter. I felt like I didn’t even recognize my skin anymore! My cleansers were too harsh, and my moisturizer just didn’t do its job anymore. So out I went, looking for those perfect products for my stubborn skin.
It took me a couple places before I felt happy with my decisions. I also couldn’t help but think that this would be a good blog post for someone who maybe doesn’t have a lot of knowledge or even time really to find products that actually work for their skin. So I made a list of tips for finding your personal skin care products!
DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GO TO THE STORE. This is totally optional, but before I go to the mall or wherever I’m buying skin care/makeup I usually like to have a little information on whatever it is I’m interested in. I will also look up reviews online to see how other people liked it.
MAKE SURE THE BEAUTY EXPERT YOU’RE TALKING TO ACTUALLY WANTS WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU, AND NOT THEIR SALES GOAL. I know, it sounds a little harsh but at the end of the day someone has a job to do. That job involves selling a bunch of product. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of beauty experts out there that value your individual needs but it’s always smart to think before you buy. A good beauty expert will offer advice, sometimes even samples for you to try, they will also likely create a client file for you to follow up with your skin care journey. Those experts are the ones you want to keep in touch with.
TRY BEFORE YOU BUY! For real though, get some samples! Make sure you like the texture and consistency of the products you are using. This is also a smart thing to do if you have sensitive skin. You don’t want to find out that your skin reacts to that $80 moisturizer after you’ve already thrown away the receipt.
START SIMPLE. If you’re trying out an entirely new routine, keep it simple. Start with the necessities first. Make sure you’ve got a good makeup remover, cleanser, something that exfoliates (scrub, brush, lotion, etc.), and moisturizer. You can go nuts with night creams, and serums later. Make sure you love the essentials first, that means love the routine too! If you know you’re not going to follow through every night with multiple steps find two in one products instead.
STAY CONSISTENT. Once you’ve found your products, stay consistent in your routine. Twice a day, morning and night. Remember, you know your skin best. Keep your receipts, just in case and enjoy your time to pamper yourself. Sometimes these products get a little expensive, but you’ve only got one skin in this lifetime. Love it like you should.
